Safe Canning Practices Class in Cottonwood

Saturday, August 22, an introduction to safe canning principles workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Cottonwood Public Safety Building, 199 S. Sixth St. in Cottonwood. The workshop will be presented by Marta Elva Stuart, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, who will introduce basic food safety principles to properly can foods using the hot water bath method for high acid foods and the pressure canner method for low acid foods. Free pressure canner testing will be provided from noon to 2 p.m. (we do not test All-American pressure canners). There is a $10 fee for the workshop and pre-registration is required. Sept. 11 - Homeschoolers' Luau in Cottonwood

Attention all Home School Families: You are invited to the annual Back to School Kick-Off Luau hosted by the Verde Valley Home Educators at Garrison Park, South Paula Street, in Cottonwood, next to the Public Library from 5 to 7 p.m.

The vision of the Verde Valley Home Educators is to provide encouragement and support for the home school families of the Verde Valley area through networking activities, information, socialization, and opportunities for education.

At the kick-off event returning home school families and newcomers will receive information about events, available support groups, e-mail tree, Arizona school law, state/national organization information, and other available educational opportunities.

To better plan for food quantities, game set up for the kids, or other questions please call Vellena (928) 282-8576. Please call to confirm your family's attendance and your family's name will be entered in for a home school prize to be given away at the luau.

Sept. 19-20 - Camp Verde Sustainable Weekend

The Citizens Committee for a Camp Verde Library has begun registration for four of its sustainable living classes. The four classes and their respective fees are: Soap Making ($30), Rainwater Harvesting ($20), Beginning Spinning ($55) and Novice to Expert Backhoe Operation ($65).

Other classes to be offered are Seven Ways to Use the Sun at Home ($20), Making Goat Cheese (taught by Romana from Healthy Thymes - fee not listed), Starting a Backyard Fruit and Vegetable Garden ($20), and Papermaking ($50).
